Studio &

Residency

The studio is located at a working wool factory in Sabadell, Spain. It was previously a warehouse for wool being shipped all around the world. The studio has 7,000 square feet of raw workspace. The ceiling averages 25 feet and has pairs of skylights running end to end. The metals doors at the entrance were designed to accommodate semi-trailers. Visiting artists will have up to 5000 square feet to work with. The length of each residency and amount of space is flexible.

The aim of Wool Factory A.I.R. is to invite approximately 6-8 visiting artists a year to engage with the particular characteristics of the studio and relative solitude of the wool factory grounds. There are carpenters and metalworkers on site that can provide materials at low cost and could be hired for fabrication jobs when needed.  Recent proposals include using 5000 square feet of the studio as a sound stage for a film, and another that would take advantage of the ceiling beams to hang a large scale sculpture.

Barcelona is forty minutes away by express train and is where most of the visiting artists will stay during their residency. The combination of working at the factory and engaging with the culture of Barcelona is a unique opportunity.

The Start

Co-founded by King & Gina Farish

King and Gina moved to Brooklyn in 2005 where King had his first studio in Red Hook. Over the following years Brooklyn was the base for stints in Vermont, Amsterdam, London, and Chicago before moving to Los Angeles in 2013. King attended Skowhegan School of Sculpture and Painting in 2011 and received a full fellowship to Vermont Studio Center for a summer session in 2013.

King and Gina moved with their son to Barcelona in 2015. Gina founded a sharing economy startup, SHAREMRKT, and King continued his art practice. They started laying the groundwork for Wool Factory A.I.R. in 2016. Jules Buck Jones was the first artist in residency - January 2017.
